Question: How long does an early scan take?

A scan usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. However, the sonographer may not be able to get good views if your baby is lying in an awkward position or moving around a lot. If its difficult to get a good image, the scan may take longer or have to be repeated at another time.

Whats the earliest you can have a scan?

An Early Pregnancy Scan (sometimes also called a Viability Scan or Dating Scan) provides reassurance in this very early stage of your pregnancy. A pregnancy can be seen on scan from as early as 6 weeks from the first day of your last period (LMP). We should be able to see a heartbeat from 6 weeks.

How do I prepare for an early pregnancy scan?

Empty your bladder 90 minutes before exam time, then consume one 8-ounce glasses of fluid (water, milk, coffee, etc.) about an hour before exam time. We recommend a two-piece outfit so we can access your abdomen without you removing your clothing. You may eat normally prior to having a fetal ultrasound.

What happens at an early scan?

An early scan may show whether or not you have a viable ongoing pregnancy. The scan will let you know if there is a heartbeat, which would be visualised not heard at this stage and beats per minute taken using a M-mode which is a safe way to measure your babys heart rate in early pregnancy.
