Question: Can therapists date their clients?

The American Psychological Association Code of Ethics, Section 10.05, states that psychologists do not engage in sexual intimacies with current therapy clients/patients. In most all states, laws prohibiting sex with clients are limited to current or recent clients.

What if Im attracted to my therapist?

Be completely honest and transparent. If you start developing feelings for your therapist, tell him or her about it. “Be honest with yourself and with your therapist,” Scharf says. “Your therapist could talk those feelings through with you, what they mean and how to manage them.

Is it OK to give my therapist a gift?

While most therapists do appreciate small gifts from clients on occasion, they are also never expected. If you do want to get your therapist a gift, for therapeutic and ethical reasons, small, meaningful items are usually best, and almost never money or a gift card.
